Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals should be used cautiously, or not at all.

Key Reasons to Avoid Using a Garbage Disposal

  • Plumbing Clogs: Contrary to popular belief, disposals don’t grind food into liquid; they create small particles that can accumulate, especially when combined with grease, leading to significant clogs in building plumbing systems and common-area sewer lines.
  • Damage to Pipes and Motors: Fibrous foods (celery, corn husks) wrap around the impellers, while hard items (bones, fruit pits) can break or dull the grinding mechanism.
  • Starch Accumulation: Starchy foods like pasta, rice, and potato peels create a paste-like substance that packs into pipes.
  • Environmental & Water Waste: Using a disposal requires running roughly 2 gallons of water per minute, and it adds unnecessary organic waste to municipal sewage systems.
  • Grease Solidification: Even if ground up, fats, oils, and grease can solidify inside pipes, causing major blockages.
  • Better Alternatives: Composting food waste is a more environmentally friendly and sustainable alternative, helping protect Alicante’s plumbing infrastructure.

Kitchen sink strainers prevent food debris from clogging your plumbing and can act as stoppers to fill the sink with water. Senior Community Manager Hugo Munoz has several strainers. Please feel free to come pick one up, no charge, courtesy of the Alicante Board of Directors.
